Printmaking, drawing and collage are physical metaphors for remembering. To fuel my material acquisition, I use my tactile memory of printed materials as they were my first experiences with art and storytelling. These mediums and materials work to create the tension between real space and imagined space that has always existed in my memory. There is the geometric space of my childhood home, but also the labyrinthian realms in other parts of my mind. These spaces are cluttered with memory-images that emerge from an untraceable source — triggered by architecture, song lyrics, or certain smells. To better understand their meaning, I translate them into a stable form. As a result, profound fragmentation exists in the work. There is a sense of interiority and intimacy, and the distance and displacement that accompanies the experience of remembering.
Photography documents moments and spaces that can be tucked away and recalled at a later date. During our lives, a photograph can become a proxy for the actual memory. Through rephotographing family pictures, childhood drawings, and spaces associated with my memory, I construct physical representations of remembering. The transparency of color slide film in these collages represents a window into a forgotten youth, where new meaning is being uncovered.
